Ax Man Tim Kendall on Horse Logging and Sustainability

My son Jacob after taking down a most difficult tree

What I did on my best day logging.

on the best day of logging I have ever had. It was the day that I realized that that the forest was not a unlimited resource, But with proper management it could be sustained for the use of everyone!

How I Did It:

After seeing logging sites that I had cut years back, were not of the same quality that had been there before. I decided that what we were doing, by listening to the corporate line, about how forest were to be managed, was not in the best interest of the forest.

Advice

  • If you want to get into this work, try and do it with as little debt as possible. Bigger is not better and a person with commonsense and willingness to treat the land with respect will gain you more jobs.
  • Don't buy into the corporate line that more production means more money. That only last for as long as they need wood. You have to weigh out your profit and loss to be able to operate profitably in the good times as well as the bad times.

I work hard at my job because: I love my work and it gives me a great deal of satisfaction to see a project completed to the professional standards that I set for myself

Something unique about my way of logging is

We use horses and technology to harvest timber in the least invasive way possible, to sustain the timber that we are working in. We encourage new high end growth, and an ecological diversity so that the land can go on supporting us in the way it always has.

The funniest thing that happened while logging was

My funniest logging experience was: One day while looking at a new woods to cut. My son and daughter ages 2 and 4 they decided to walk with me. While walking through the woods we disturbed a big buck deer. It jumped and ran, my daughter and son both screamed and proceeded to climb up my back!

The scariest thing that happened while logging was

The scariest thing that happened while logging was: when My oldest daughter age 22 slipped and fell in front of my dozer and had her pelvis crushed. Luckily she was able to heal up with very few lasting problems.
